Omega-3’s are known to be essential fatty acids, these fats are mostly missed in our modern diet. Therefore it is key to incorporate these fats into your lifestyle as much as possible.
We thrive on a mix of fat types, however avoiding the dreaded trans fat, is key. Industrial fats are not the same as natural fats, therefore the structure and the type of fat does affect how it behaves in the body.
So what are the benefits of healthy fats?
As fats are very energy dense, it provides us with energy.
It helps balance and make hormones, especially our sex hormones along with another hormone involved in blood sugar regulation and mineral and fluid level regulation.
Formation of our cell membranes
Forming our brain and nervous system
Transportation of fat soluble Vitamin A, D, E, K
Two fatty acids that we can’t make on our own, Omega-3 and Omega-6
So, apart from the above, why do we care so much about the Omega 3 and Omega 6 fat ratio?
These polyunsaturated fats have many double bonds, we can not make these on our own, therefore they are key to incorporate into our diet.
It is therefore key to focus on more natural fat sources, than refined processed foods that contain hydrogenated fats.
You can naturally add more natural Omega-3 fats to your lifestyle by making simple breakfast swaps.
Todays western diet has lead to an imbalance when it comes to our omega fat ratio’s. Therefore a distorted ratio of these polyunsaturated fats may be one of the reasons why our society is so chronically ill and inflamed.
Excess inflammation may be one of the leading drivers of most serious diseases we are dealing with today, from metabolic syndrome, diabetes, arthritis, Alzheimer’s along with various other chronic diseases.
According to ref: (1) The typical Omega-6 to Omega-3 ratio for non-industrial populations ranged from 4:1 to 1:4.
Hunter and gathers ate around 2:1 to 1:4 while Inuit, ate more Omega-3’s ratio 1:4
Bottom line, we want to have a balance, secondly avoid saturated fat that is combined with a lot of processed sugars, refined carbohydrates (low quality foods).
Our bodies know what to do with natural occurring saturated fats, like stearic acid found in cocoa butter.
Think of Balance when adding fats to your diet.
